Slope and drainage assessment
Before any stone moves, we read how water travels across the site. Grade, runoff paths, and soil conditions determine the wall's footing and how it sheds water. A wall built without that read is the kind that starts leaning.

Water management built in
The wall is built to move water rather than trap it behind the stone: geotextile fabric, backfill with drain rock, and a perforated drain line. Drainage is the single most important thing on any retaining wall. It is behind almost every wall failure we see, because waterlogged soil pushes with far more force than dry soil does, and that is as true of a block wall as it is of natural boulder.
Terraces that give you usable yard
A slope you can barely mow becomes level ground. Multi-level terraces open up planting beds, seating areas, or flat lawn where there was nothing but grade.
Part of a larger build
A wall is planned alongside the rest of the build rather than designed in isolation, so the grading, the planting and the wall all account for each other.

Common questions
When is the best time of year to build a boulder wall?
Boulder walls are hardscape, so they are far less season-bound than planting. As we cover in our post on the best time of year to landscape in Northern Utah, walls, patios, and grading do not care about transplant stress, so mid-summer and even winter are workable whenever the ground is. Planting and sod around a finished wall are what wait for the April to June or August to October windows.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Weber County?
It depends on your city, and it is worth checking before the design is finalized. Grading on its own does not need a permit. Retaining walls are the exception: past a certain height a wall has to be engineered, and some cities cap how tall a single wall may be at all, which means a taller grade change has to be stepped back into terraces instead of built as one wall. We help homeowners find out what their city requires, and we work with engineers who stamp the plans when that is needed.
What does a boulder wall cost?
It depends on length, height, access to the site, and the stone you choose, so a wall can sit almost anywhere inside a project's budget. We do not publish per-service pricing. Our projects start at $10,000, and the wall is quoted in detail from the plan, for free, before anything starts.
How much maintenance does a boulder wall need?
Very little, and that is most of the appeal. Set correctly, the stone does not need sealing, staining, or replacing the way a timber or block wall eventually will. Our process ends with a final walkthrough of the finished space and care guidance for it.
